Americas Bean-to-Bar and Craft Chocolatier Competition 2023 – Winners

The International Chocolate Awards is pleased to announce the Winners of the 2023 Americas Bean-to-Bar and Craft Chocolatier Competition, which was judged remotely by our international pool of judges and Grand Jury during the Summer of 2023.

The winners were announced on 9 September 2023 on Zoom with organizers and Grand Jury members joining in from all corners of the world.

Judges

The judging panel included our regular judges from all over the Americas region, along with many of our IICCT alumni and other specialists from the local area and members of our international Grand Jury panel.

All judging was anonymised, included at the Grand Jury final session, where Golds, Silver and Bronze prizes were awarded by private voting according to the Grand Jury rules.

All Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in this competition are eligible to enter the World Final in October 2023.

Competition Highlights

This year, the rare occasion of two entries receiving the same score for a Gold prize happened twice. The Gold winners in the Micro-batch, plain/origin dark bar category: Feliu (Mexico) with their Soconusco 71% and Qantu (Canada) with their Gran Blanco 70% both scored 90.7, and in addition, both of them received four special prizes. The other double-gold score came in the Dark chocolate bars with inclusions or pieces category: Peruvian Cacaosuyo‘s Piura Nibs and Brazilian MOA Chocolates’ 70% Com Cupuaçu also scored 90.7 points.

The competition saw the quality of entries elevate to the point that all the overall winners scored 90 points or above. Cacao Hunters from Colombia came back to the competition with a bang, winning both the Plain/origin dark and milk bar categories with their Arauca 70% and the Tumaco Leche 53% bars scoring 90.7 and 90.4 respectively.

Among the trends this season, we saw the renaissance of the classic milk chocolate, or the purposeful use of vanilla, as well as the addition of local fruits and herbs, such as ‘pitaya de mayo’ (a type of cactus fig in Mexico), Andean lavender, rica rica, cupuaçu, or sunfo.

The 2023 Americas Winners are:
