The International Chocolate Awards is pleased to announce the Winners of the 2024 Peruvian Cacao Country Support Competition, the 9no Concurso Nacional de Chocolate Peruano, which was judged remotely in Peru and also by our international pool of judges and Grand Jury during June-July 2024.
The winners were announced on 20 July 2024 in Lima, Peru as part of the Salón del Cacao y Chocolate in person at a delightful ceremony.
This year, the Peruvian competition became part of the World Final series of the International Chocolate Awards, and thus its winners are eligible to enter the World Final competition organized in October 2024. Just like last year, the competition saw a record number of entries again, from all over the country.
Judges
The judging panel included our regular judges from Peru, along with many of our IICCT alumni and other specialists from the local area and members of our international Grand Jury panel.
All judging was anonymized, including the Grand Jury final session, where Golds, Silver and Bronze prizes were awarded by private voting according to the Grand Jury rules.
Competition Highlights
Last year’s tendency of super high scores continued in 2024 as well. The four overall winners announced in the competition all scored over 92 points, the highest score being 93.5 points for Renacer Chocolatier‘s Subicanum y Mandarina, a filled dark chocolate bonbon.
As general comments, the International Chocolate Awards’ founders highlighted the use of the best cacaos from Peru along with gentle and bean-specific roast profiles, noting that no other makers understand Peruvian cacao as well as Peruvian chocolate makers.
As for notable flavorings, some entrants chose iconic regional ingredients: the mint-like herb muña, the jungle cilantro named sachaculantro, Andean tubers like maca and olluco, as well as fruits from cacao’s various biomes such as Piura mangoes, physalis, macambo (Theobroma bicolor), copoazú (Theobroma grandiflorum) and cupui (Theobroma subincanum), tucupi (manioc root extract), sweet potatoes, and Amazonian camu camu.Â
Some entrants went as far as recreating local dishes in chocolate form: Renacer Chocolatier received a Gold prize and 90.4 points for their white chocolate based Ceviche bonbon. The company’s filled chocolates were highly praised in the other filled categories as well, they won the Gold prize in all four of them (dark, milk, white and combination chocolate).Â
